Through the Panama Canal

Well, did we get lucky. After I returned from the States we quickly made our way up towards Colon and Shelter Bay Marina to install the motor mounts I had brought back. Not much of a choice with fruit and veg in Nargana, and then no veggie boats to be found, but got lucky and found a veggie boat just heading out by Porvenir after we checked out. Luckily, a calm night and out the next morning just after 6 a.m.

Checked in with the morning Cruising Net on 6209 on the way from Porvenir to Linton, then anchored in Linton after a long day of motoring with no wind. Not really what we wanted to do with questionable motor mounts! Had a 4' wahoo right next to the boat, but when I took over the pole he decided to make a run for it and spit the lure right next to the boat. And wahoo being our favorite fish to eat! Took the dinghy over to the anchorage at Panamarina to check out the availability of mooring balls for August. Nothing available, but had a great lunch of cheeseburger and fries. Restaurants are few and far between down here, so that was a real treat to have someone else do all the work!

Up the next morning to head to Shelter Bay. Turned the SouthWest Caribbean Net on again, not planning to check in, just wanted to listen. Relaxing in the cockpit when we heard Antipodes checking in and looking for line handlers to go through the Canal the following week. I made it down below in record time to say that we'd love to help them out. Dennis said afterwards we should have checked out what kind of boat it was first ... it could have been a 26' sailboat. Said I didn't care, it was a great opportunity. Turned out to be a 55' steel trawler with owners Jim and Lara and their guest Dan. Great boat and really nice people - how lucky was that??

Lots of work to do in the marina (I'll post that on a later blog). The first departure was supposed to be Wednesday, but ended up being a Saturday/Sunday transit. It was a delay for them, but actually worked out better for us. We got on to Antipodes on Saturday afternoon, after lunch, a swim in the pool and a shower. Headed off to the Flats around 2 p.m. to wait for the Advisors/Pilots to board the 3 cruising boats heading through the Canal. There was Antipodes, Ruby Slippers and Thule. Our Advisor was Jose, who was a tugboat captain doing this on his day off. Being the bigger boat (wow, how cool is that to say?!), the Advisors decided that the 2 sailboats would raft off to us while Jim steered us all through the locks. He said he likes to call those fiberglass fenders! Worked out great for us (well, us as line handlers), since the sailboats did all the line handling and Jim did all the helm work. Bow and stern thrusters sure are nice. Tied up to the mooring ball in Gatun Lake around 8 p.m., ate our cheeseburgers and beans and collapsed early.

Up the next morning at 5:45 when it started to rain and it was like throwing a switch and the howler monkeys started up. Our next Advisor was Ricardo, who was an instructor at the maritime school, teaching people how to navigate the Canal. We left the mooring ball around 6:30 in the morning and arrived at the locks around noon. Shaun was the only one to see us on the Miraflores Lock web cam. We said we'd wave, but he said it was just kind of a blur! We actually had to handle the lines this time, but it was fun. The Erie Barge Canal is much more challenging, since it's a side tie. A center tie, with someone throwing you monkey fists (small lines) to attach to your larger lines is much easier. Well, that's if they can throw. The guys at the Miraflores locks had a challenge or two and need to improve their aim!

Through the locks and tied up to the the Balboa Yacht Club mooring just after 1 p.m. A couple of days and a lot of fun. Took the taxi boat in, had a drink at the Yacht Club and then a taxi to Costa Inn.

Dan, who helped Jim and Lara bring the boat from Puerto Rico, didn't have anywhere booked, so I called the hotel and we got him a room as well. We checked into the Costa, relaxed, showered and met up for dinner. Walked for a bit to see if we could find a restaurant, then took a taxi up by the Vegas Inn and went to the Brew Pub where we had dinner with Sea Cycle. Reasonable prices and fantastic food, and Dan insisted on treating us! Spent an enjoyable evening, then met him for breakfast the next morning. He headed out on a walk before his flight left, and we went to try Immigration stuff, which didn't work out, so took the air conditioned bus back to Colon for a whole $2.50 a person.

Back in Michigan

Back with the kids, and I'm so excited. Thirty degree temperature drop, but I'm okay with that. First time in a long time that my sweat rag is used only to tie my hair back. Missed the exit to Kelly's, but eventually found my way there.

So wonderful to see all the kids again. Arrived in Michgan Wednesday, April 7th, spent time with Kelly and then to Shaun's. Spent my time between Kelly and Shaun and just loved it.

Kelly got everyone together and we celebrated Parker's birthday and a family function. All the kids decided to spend the night - what craziness! The boys were all upstairs, and Shaun and I were downstairs with all the girls. Kelly and Charlie are great to put up with all this family stuff and craziness to make us happy! Lots of babysitting and I loved it!!!

Swimming Pool

Okay, it's time to catch up on the blog site, since we've had so much happen. Anchored in the Swimming Pool anchorage with way too many boats, just so that we could do the Monday night happy hour. Spent more time with Homer's Odyssey - need to email and keep in touch with them!! So enjoyed their company.

Paul on Dream Weaver stopped by and invited us over for Mexican dinner and to meet their guests. Had a wonderful night with Paul and Karin, their guests Jeff, Valerie and Andrea, Anthylide, Sea Cycle and ourselves. We all pitched in, had a great meal and hopefully didn't leave Karin too much mess to clean up. Valerie and her daughter, Andrea (I hope I have the name right!) admired Dennis' bracelet, so he was up first thing in the morning to make one for them before they left.

It was Easter weekend and the Kuna Port Authority decided to drive around to each boat to attempt to collect money. They inspected our paperwork, Dennis did the whole Detroit Police, US Marine thing, told them we were heading to Nargana for me to fly out, and they were great. Everyone else was charged in all the anchorages. We left the Holandes, went to Nabadup, then to Nargana, and every time the panga with the military and Kunas passed our boat, they all smiled and waved! Sometimes professional courtesy works!

So, here I am, off on Air Panama, back to visit the kids and grandkids. Dennis is sad, but I'm excited!!!!! ~~~_/)~~~

Boat Sitting

Picked up the anchor in Nabadup and had a nice motorsail over to Green Island to meet up with Mark and Deb on Sea Cycle and take over our boat sitting duties of Sojourn on the weekend. Okay, so we were a few days early to spend some time with Sea Cycle. Mark ended up catching some kind of bug, giving him a sore throat and making him feel pretty lousy, so they stayed at Green a day longer than us. Not a bad place to be anchored, that's for sure. Stan and Lynn from Homer's Odyssey came over, introduced themselves and volunteered to take garbage ashore to burn. Spent some really enjoyable time with them. Brian and Sue on Darramy were already there and Brian got Deb and I to join them in water aerobics. We're going to try to keep it up!


Snorkelling is good and there's lot of different areas to investigate. Went to the outside reef that we've enjoyed in the past. Dennis called me over to take a photo of 2 blowfish that were face to face. I got over there and they took off. Guess it was that 6' lemon shark cruising by that did it. We slowly swam back to the dinghy, which was a really, really long way away, looking around us the whole way back while Dennis held my hand. I guess anything to get the death grip off his wet suit! We tried to go snorkelling every day while we were there since there's so many interesting places to see.


Went over with Sue from Darramy to Homer's Odyssey for a visit from Catherina with her beautiful jewellery. So many choices. Bought two things for myself and then some gifts for our girls (that they don't know about yet). Catherina and her husband make some amazing jewellery out of different nuts, a couple of which are vegetable ivory. So neat!


It was our week for boat sitting Sojourn, so Dennis went over every day to do the boat check. By Friday we were getting low on water and wanted to head to Nargana for a refill on our Tropigas tank, gas and diesel. We needed a good charge on the batteries, so I went and picked up Mark and Deb in our dinghy and they brought their empty jugs and joined us on the hour motor. It sure was nice having the extra help to fill the water tank. When we pulled up there was a supply boat there, so we tied off to them to fill up. Unfortunately, the hose wouldn't reach all the way to the water tank, but at least made it as far as the deck so that Dennis and Mark could fill the jerry cans and then carry them across the deck to fill the main tank. Deb and I wandered the town while they did all the work.

Then motored over to Nargana, filled up on gas and diesel, had lunch and picked up some fruit and veggies. Mark and Deb hadn't been here yet, so I gave them the grand tour of Nargana and Corozon de Jesus. Didn't take too long! Off we went, motored back an hour and a bit, dropped them back off at Sea Cycle and collapsed. Busy day!

Did a last check of Sojourn on Saturday, and then we headed off to the Holandes on Sunday morning. Had an amazing sail, anchoring in the Swimming Pool in 9' of water, much to Dennis' delight. I prefer deeper water, but we do have a manual windlass, so shallow works out well for him. Dennis made the comment about almost getting whiplash when we hit 10' of water and I hit Reverse. They call it the swimming pool because the water is so, so clear, so you have t0 pay attention to the depth sounder because you always think you're going to be aground. Well, I do anyway.
